The 2026 Family Umrah Checklist: Visas, Nusuk Permits, and Travel Rules

Planning an Umrah trip with the whole family is amazing, but let's be honest—managing paperwork for kids, spouses, and aging parents is stressful. Saudi Arabia moved a lot of their travel systems online recently. While that makes things faster, it also means a single missed step or expired date can cause massive delays at the airport.

To keep things simple, here is a practical checklist you can follow before your flight.

Quick Pre-Departure Checklist

  • Valid Passports: Make sure every passport has at least six months of validity left from the day you plan to fly.

  • The Right Visa: Grab your official Umrah e-Visa or tourist visa ahead of time.

  • Nusuk App Setup: Download the app early and book your slot times.

  • Health Cover: Emergency medical insurance comes bundled automatically when you process your official Saudi visa.

1. Choosing Your Family's Visa Type

You have a few different routes depending on how you plan to travel:

  • The Umrah e-Visa: Best if you are booking through an authorized travel desk and traveling strictly for pilgrimage.

  • Tourist e-Visa: Great if you want flexibility to visit other cities across Saudi Arabia alongside your Umrah trip.

  • Family Visit Visa: If a relative living and working in Saudi Arabia invites you over, you can perform Umrah while staying with them.

2. Watch Out for the 30-Day Rule

A lot of people make the mistake of applying months in advance. Here is the catch: once an official Umrah visa is issued, you must enter Saudi Arabia within 30 days.

If you wait too long, the visa lapses, and you will have to pay and reapply. Timing your application roughly two to three weeks before departure is usually the safest bet.

3. Booking on the Nusuk App

Your visa gets you across the border, but you still need digital permits to actually visit specific holy sites:

  • The Grand Mosque (Makkah): You might need an active Nusuk permit during high-traffic travel periods.

  • Rawdah Al-Sharifa (Madinah): Booking a time slot here is mandatory for both men and women.

  • Family Profiles: Set up your own profile on the app first, then add your children and parents as dependents so you can book slots together as a group.
