Saudi visas for Tanzanian Citizens

Traveling from Dar es Salaam to Riyadh isn't as simple as booking online and clicking a button for an instant visa. While business travel and trade between Tanzania and Saudi Arabia are growing, the immigration rules remain strict. Assuming that every traveler can easily grab an electronic visa is a common misstep that can lead to major issues at the airport.

Tanzanian citizens generally fall into two distinct tracks depending on their travel history and residency status. Knowing exactly where you stand before booking your flights saves you a massive headache at check-in.

The Online Shortcut: eVisa and Visa on Arrival Rules

Let's clear up the online visa situation first. A normal Tanzanian passport won't let you apply for a standard tourist eVisa straight out of the box. However, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) does allow an online application or a Visa on Arrival at international airports like Riyadh, Jeddah, or Dammam if you already hold specific international credentials.

You qualify for this fast-track route if you meet any of these three situations:

  • You have a valid, unexpired tourist or business visa from the United States, the United Kingdom, or any Schengen state. Crucially, this visa must have been used at least once and must carry an official entry stamp from the country that issued it.

  • You hold official permanent residency status within the US, the UK, or an EU nation.

  • You hold a valid residency card (Iqama) from another GCC country, such as the UAE, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, or Kuwait. This permit needs at least three months of remaining validity, and your official job title must match their list of approved corporate professions.

If you fit into one of these specific buckets, you can get a one-year, multiple-entry visa. It allows you to stay for up to 90 days at a time for business meetings, leisure travel, or performing Umrah outside of the main Hajj window.

The Traditional Consular Route via Dar es Salaam

What if you don't hold one of those qualifying Western visas or GCC residency cards? Then you have to go the traditional route and secure a physical paper sticker visa before leaving Tanzania. This means submitting your paperwork to the Saudi Embassy in Dar es Salaam or through their official processing partner, Tasheer (VFS Global).

The documents you need change completely based on the purpose of your trip.

Corporate and Business Visits

If you are an executive or investor exploring partnerships inside the Kingdom, you need an Electronic Letter of Invitation. Your host company in Saudi Arabia has to get this issued through the Saudi Chamber of Commerce or the Saudi Ministry of Investment (MISA).

Along with that invitation, you will need to submit a formal introduction letter from your company in Tanzania, plus certified copies of your local entity's BRELA Certificate of Incorporation and Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). Note that this visa doesn't let you work there locally; it is strictly for meetings and contract signings.

Employment and Work Visas

If you are relocating for a job under corporate sponsorship, the path requires a specific sequence of clear steps:

  • First, your sponsoring employer in Saudi Arabia must secure a block visa approval through the Ministry of Human Resources.

  • Next, you have to pass a physical health screening at a medical facility in Tanzania that is explicitly accredited by Wafid (formerly known as GAMCA).

  • From there, your university degrees, professional certificates, and police clearance records must be authenticated sequentially by the Tanzanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation (MoFAEAC) and then by the Saudi Embassy.

  • Finally, your physical passport goes to the Tasheer service center in Dar es Salaam for the final visa sticker.

Practical Guidelines for a Smooth Application

A few small details can hold an application for weeks if overlooked. First, your medical records must be uploaded directly to the digital Wafid portal by the clinic itself. The embassy's system will automatically reject your files if they lack the official digital QR tracking code from an accredited facility.

Second, look closely at your passport expiration date. It needs to have at least six months of validity remaining from the day you plan to land in Saudi Arabia, and it must have two blank pages facing each other.

Finally, don't just show up at the service center with a stack of papers. You have to log onto the official MOFA Enjaz platform first, build an electronic profile, pay your processing fees, and buy the mandatory medical insurance coverage through the site before handing over your physical passport package in Dar es Salaam. If it's your first time applying, you will also complete a live biometric scan (fingerprints and eye scans) at the Tasheer center during your appointment.

Figure out your exact administrative path well before spending money on flights. Using a standard online portal without meeting the conditional criteria just leads to a quick boarding denial at Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA). Taking the time to line up your paperwork correctly ensures you make it to your destination without facing any issues or delays.

ٍVisa process can become complex if the right steps are not taken.
